Son Explains Why Music Legend Mike Ejeagha Was Buried Within 24 Hours

Mike Ejeagha's son reveals the touching reason behind his father's swift burial, fulfilling the music icon's final wish with family and state support.

Mike Ejeagha, the respected Nigerian highlife legend and folklorist, was buried less than a day after his death in accordance with his personal request. His son, Emmanuel Ejeagha, shared that the family came together immediately after his passing to ensure this final wish was fulfilled.

The quiet burial took place on June 7 in Ejeagha’s hometown, Umuagba, Imezi-Owa, located in Enugu State. Emmanuel confirmed that Governor Peter Mbah was informed and supported the family’s decision to proceed quickly with the burial. According to Emmanuel, both the family and the state agreed that the singer’s wishes should be respected without delay.

Plans are already underway for an official funeral event, which is expected to take place in October 2025. The arrangements will be managed by a joint committee involving the family and the Enugu State government.

Emmanuel also called on the Federal Government to honour his father posthumously, expressing disappointment that the veteran artist did not receive national recognition while he was alive.

Mike Ejeagha was born on April 4, 1930. He became a central figure in preserving and promoting Igbo language music. One of his most notable works, Gwo gwo gwo ngwo, originally released in 1983, found new life in 2024 after it was featured in a global dance challenge initiated by popular content creator Brain Jotter.
