The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has placed its search and rescue team on high alert due to forecasted heavy rains in Abuja and nearby states. This decision follows an early warning from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET) about incoming thunderstorms, which could stretch until May 3.
Acting Director-General of FEMD, Mr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, emphasized the importance of taking precautionary measures to prevent damage to lives and property. According to NiMET’s advisory, thunderstorms are already occurring in Benue, Plateau, and Nasarawa states, with potential storms expected to affect Edo, Imo, Abia, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory. The forecast warns that areas experiencing thunderstorms may also face strong, gusty winds.
Residents were advised to avoid driving under heavy rainfall, stay away from trees to reduce the risk of injury from falling branches, and disconnect electrical appliances during storms to prevent accidents. Mr. Mohammed reiterated the department’s commitment to safeguarding the community and encouraged the public to report emergencies using the toll-free number 112.
