A suicide bomber attempting to breach the Mogadishu Army Cantonment along the Mararaba-Nyanya expressway triggered an explosion in Abuja on Monday afternoon. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the blast, stating that the individual was wearing an improvised explosive device (IED) and died instantly when the device went off.
The explosion, which occurred around 1:47 p.m., also left one passerby injured. Authorities were quickly alerted, and a joint security and emergency response was activated. Heavily armed personnel had already sealed off the area when NEMA’s response team arrived.
In a statement released the following day, NEMA explained that early findings suggested the bomber was attempting to force entry into the military base when the IED exploded. The injured civilian received immediate medical attention and was taken to the National Hospital in Abuja by the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit.
Forensic specialists were also deployed to investigate the scene, with operations wrapping up officially at 5:29 p.m. The response involved multiple agencies, including NEMA, the Nigerian Military, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
