Surge in Political Party Applications as INEC Extends Voter Registration in Anambra

INEC reports 134 political associations seeking registration and extends voter registration in Anambra following strong public turnout and appeals.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received five additional applications from groups aiming to become political parties, pushing the total number of requests to 134. This was revealed in a statement issued on Thursday by Mr. Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, following a meeting held in Abuja.

Meanwhile, INEC announced an extension of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State by three days, citing strong turnout and appeals from stakeholders. The registration, which was initially set to end on July 17, will now conclude on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

According to Olumekun, 96,085 new voters were registered within nine days across 326 registration centres in the state, averaging over 10,600 registrations per day. Additionally, 12,595 people applied to transfer their voter details, while 7,061 requested updates or replacements for their lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

The breakdown of new registrants shows that women make up 58 percent of the total, while over half of those registered (52.48 percent) are aged between 18 and 34.

Olumekun also confirmed that details of the 134 political associations, including their proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leadership, are now available on INEC’s official platforms for public awareness.
