Three Anambra Police Inspectors Detained for Alleged Extortion During Patrol

Three police inspectors in Anambra have been detained for allegedly extorting a citizen during patrol. Disciplinary actions are now underway.

Three police inspectors in Anambra State have been detained and are now facing internal disciplinary actions following allegations of extortion. According to a statement issued by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the officers were reported to have stopped a member of the public during a routine patrol in Awka, searched his phone without justification, and collected money from him.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, reportedly condemned the incident after personally questioning the involved officers. He ordered their immediate detention on June 11 and directed that they be subjected to orderly room trial—an internal disciplinary process used by the Nigeria Police Force.

Describing the officers’ behavior as unacceptable and unprofessional, the Commissioner emphasized that such misconduct not only goes against the core values of the police but also damages public trust. He stressed that the Nigeria Police Force stands for accountability, discipline, and responsibility, and will not tolerate any abuse of power by its personnel.

The Commissioner warned that actions like these could harm the relationship between the police and the communities they serve, as they contradict the mission of the force and undermine its integrity.
