President Bola Tinubu has approved the formation of a high-powered committee to coordinate the state burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82.
The committee will be chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. Its mandate is to ensure a respectful and well-organised farewell for the late former president.
According to a statement released on Monday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, the committee includes several key ministers and national security chiefs. Members include the Ministers of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning; Defence; Information and National Orientation; Works; Interior; the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); Housing and Urban Development; Culture and Creative Economy; and the State Minister for Health and Social Welfare.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is among the prominent figures appointed. Other members include the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, and the Chief of Defence Staff. The Office of the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, will serve as the committee’s secretariat.
President Tinubu has also directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to open condolence registers at their entrances, allowing Nigerians to pay their final respects. In addition, central condolence registers will be available at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, especially for members of the diplomatic corps and the general public.
