Tinubu Rejects One-Party Allegations, Says INEC Free to Register New Parties

President Tinubu says his government never halted political party registration, dismisses claims of pushing Nigeria toward one-party rule.

President Bola Tinubu has firmly denied reports suggesting his administration is working to stop the registration of new political parties or create a one-party state in Nigeria. Speaking on June 12 during a joint session of the National Assembly in Abuja to commemorate Democracy Day, the president addressed the issue directly.

He explained that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not received any instruction from him or his government to halt the registration process of political parties. Tinubu stressed that there has been no interference in INEC’s constitutional role.

Responding to speculation about the political direction of the country, he dismissed claims that his government is steering Nigeria toward a single-party system. He emphasized that the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party, is open to all Nigerians who wish to join.

According to the president, rejecting new members would be politically unfair. He welcomed new APC members from Delta and Akwa Ibom States and described their entry into the party as a positive step.

In a pointed remark aimed at opposition parties, Tinubu said he has no intention of helping political groups that are dealing with internal problems. He remarked that watching their disorganization brings him satisfaction.
