The Federal Government has declared that Nigeria’s economy is on a path of steady recovery, thanks to President Bola Tinubu’s sweeping reforms. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mallam Mohammed Idris, made the statement in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), led by its newly elected executives.

Idris said the administration’s policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates, are beginning to yield visible results. While admitting that economic challenges persist, he emphasized that there are clear signs of improvement.

“The economy is not yet where we want it to be, but we are seeing steady progress. Even international rating agencies have noted the positive direction of our economic management. We are gradually turning the corner,” the Minister said.

He highlighted the positive impact of the Federal Government’s Students Loan Scheme, revealing that over 300,000 students across the country are already benefitting from free tuition and maintenance allowances provided by the government. He described the move as an unprecedented step towards educational access and social welfare.

Idris also spoke on national security, noting that the government is tackling security threats with renewed intensity. He urged the media to give balanced coverage by not only reporting attacks but also highlighting the successes and sacrifices of the Armed Forces.

Reacting to the NGE’s Law Reform Report, Idris promised to review the document in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice. He said a committee would be set up within his ministry to study the recommendations in detail.

Earlier, NGE Deputy President Dr. Sebastian Abu presented the report, which identifies several outdated media laws in need of reform. He said the goal is to create a more open and supportive legal environment for journalists and media professionals in the country.
