A 13-year-old girl tragically lost her life after falling into a deep reservoir while taking photos with her father during a half-term walk. Emergency teams were called to Baitings Dam near Ripponden, West Yorkshire, on May 28 after the girl slipped over the parapet into the 140-foot deep water. Despite extensive underwater searches by police and rescue crews, the girl was not found immediately.
The girl, described as having a promising future and recently starting grammar school, was posing for photos with her father when the accident occurred. Witnesses reported a 30-foot drop from where she stood into the reservoir. Her father, who has a heart condition, was seen clutching his chest in distress and was taken away by ambulance after calling out her name.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed they recovered a body on May 29, though formal identification is still pending. The family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers. Police stated the incident is not believed to be suspicious, and investigations continue to clarify the circumstances.
Local residents expressed concern over the safety measures at the dam. An 80-year-old neighbor noted the metal railings added to the stone wall offer little protection and may even encourage risky behavior by making it easier to climb onto the wall.
This heartbreaking event has deeply affected the community, highlighting the need for improved safety around reservoirs. The girl’s family remains in mourning as the investigation proceeds.
