A 40-foot container truck crushed a commercial minibus on Old Ipaja Road, Lagos, on Sunday morning, killing the driver on the spot and injuring three passengers. The crash happened around 9 a.m. near the Agbotikuyo area when the truck, marked MUS 729 XY, lost its brakes and rammed into the smaller vehicle heading toward Iyana Ipaja in Alimosho.
The impact killed the minibus driver immediately, while two women and one man were rescued with injuries and handed over to emergency responders. Officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) arrived swiftly to manage the scene, clear the road, and ease the heavy traffic that followed along Old Ipaja Road and nearby routes like Shofunde and Olufunlayo.
This accident comes just two days after another crash in the same Alimosho area, where two BRT buses collided at Cement Bus Stop, hospitalising several passengers, including a journalist.
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, confirmed the latest incident and sympathised with the affected families. He said the truck flipped onto the minibus after losing control and stressed that emergency teams from LASEMA, LASAMBUS, and the police quickly secured the site and recovered the driver’s body.
The truck driver, who attempted to flee, was caught by LASTMA officials and handed over to the Elere and Area G police units.
Giwa warned truck operators to prioritise maintenance, especially of brake systems, before going on the road. He emphasised that the state government will continue to enforce roadworthiness checks to prevent similar tragedies.
