Former U.S. President Donald Trump has called for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, signaling that the U.S. would impose more sanctions if the truce is ignored. In a recent social media post, Trump stated that if the ceasefire fails to hold, the U.S. and its allies will impose further sanctions. He hoped both nations would honor the truce, which could lead to peace negotiations. Trump also emphasized that he would be available to assist in the peace process at any moment.
While Ukraine expressed readiness to accept the 30-day ceasefire immediately, Russia offered a much shorter, three-day ceasefire to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed a phone conversation with Trump, stating that Kyiv was prepared for the ceasefire to begin immediately. He added that Russia needed to prove its commitment to ending the war by agreeing to an unconditional ceasefire.
However, the Ukrainian government criticized Russia’s previous three-day ceasefire proposal, noting that Moscow violated it within hours of its commencement, labeling the initiative a “farce.” Moscow, in turn, accused Kyiv of continuing its military actions.
In February, Trump engaged in peace negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, promising to end the war within 24 hours if re-elected. Despite his efforts, frustration has grown as the conflict persists. Senior U.S. officials have warned that Washington may reconsider its role as a mediator if no significant progress is made soon.
