Two Vigilante Group Members Killed in Trailer Accident at UNIBEN Gate

A tragic trailer accident claimed the lives of two Vigilante Group members in Benin City on April 29, 2025, near the University of Benin. Authorities are investigating.

Two members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria tragically lost their lives in an accident involving an articulated vehicle in Benin City, Edo State, early on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. The incident occurred in front of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) gate. One of the victims was identified as Mustapha, whose identity card was found at the scene. The other victim’s head was severely crushed, making identification difficult.

The two men, who were riding a motorcycle, were struck by a speeding trailer, which fled the scene immediately after the accident. A witness, a nearby hawker, described the event as happening in an instant. The witness mentioned, “The trailer was heading towards Lagos, and before we knew what had happened, the men were lying on the road, lifeless, with their heads crushed.” The cause of the accident remains unclear, as it is uncertain whether the vigilantes were attempting to stop the trailer when the incident occurred.

Moses Yamu, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, confirmed the tragic event, stating that an investigation was underway. “It’s true that the accident took place and the two men died as a result. I am awaiting further details from the Divisional Police Officers in charge of the area,” said Yamu.

The bodies of the deceased have been transported to the morgue at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for further examination
