Dr. Alex Ogunniyi, a physiotherapist with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), was shot and killed last Friday near the hospital while heading out for lunch. The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Joshua Uwaila, confirmed the incident on Tuesday on behalf of the management.
According to preliminary information, Ogunniyi was caught in the crossfire during a chase involving two vehicles. One of the vehicles reportedly opened fire at the other, and a stray bullet struck Ogunniyi in the neck. He was immediately rushed to UBTH’s Accident and Emergency department but was confirmed dead shortly after.
The hospital management has officially reported the case to the Edo State Police Command and also informed the Department of State Services (DSS), urging both agencies to investigate and bring those responsible to justice.
The incident has sparked outrage among health workers at UBTH, many of whom staged a protest in response to the killing, calling for swift action and better security for staff and the surrounding area.
