Ben Askren, former UFC star and Bellator champion, has successfully undergone a double lung transplant just one week after being placed on the waiting list. The 40-year-old was battling severe pneumonia caused by a staph infection that left him in critical condition and reliant on a ventilator. His wife, Amy Askren, announced the news on social media Monday morning, calling it a miracle and thanking the anonymous donor and their family for giving her husband another chance at life.
Amy described the past few weeks as surreal, reflecting on how Ben was healthy and active only a short time ago. She called this new chapter a gift and asked for continued prayers that his body will accept the lungs. She also expressed deep appreciation for the overwhelming support they’ve received.
Askren, a father of three, was hospitalized in Wisconsin. His medical journey has been met with concern and hope from fans worldwide. He retired from mixed martial arts in 2019, following a brief run in the UFC, but had a long and successful career prior to that.
Starting his MMA journey in 2009, Askren built a reputation as one of the top fighters outside the UFC. He was a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion, represented the U.S. at the 2008 Olympics, and held titles in Bellator and ONE Championship during an impressive undefeated streak.
As he recovers, Amy hopes Ben will be able to share his own update once he’s well enough and off medication. For now, supporters continue to rally behind the Askren family during this challenging time.
