The University of Lagos, Nigeria, has warned about fraudsters impersonating its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, in a procurement scam. According to Alhaja Alaga Adejoke Ibraheem, Head of the Communication Unit, unknown individuals contact people through social media platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, X, and WhatsApp.
These scammers falsely claim to represent the Vice-Chancellor and offer fake procurement contracts for laptops and computers. They demand secrecy, upfront payments, and propose illegal profit-sharing schemes, such as a 60/40 split. Communications are directed to private email addresses instead of official university channels. The university clarified that all its procurement processes are transparent, competitive, and compliant with Nigerian laws.
No legitimate UNILAG representative, especially the Vice-Chancellor, would request payments in advance, offer kickbacks, or use personal emails or social media for official business. The public is urged to treat such messages as fraudulent and report them immediately. UNILAG has notified law enforcement and is working with authorities to identify and prosecute the culprits.
To avoid falling victim, the university advises verifying suspicious communication through official channels, such as communicationunit@unilag.edu.ng or vcoffice@unilag.edu.ng. The institution emphasized its commitment to integrity and transparency, vowing to protect its reputation and prevent further scams through public awareness and cooperation.
