Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has advised Nigerian youths to carry out proper research before deciding to relocate abroad for education. He made this statement while responding to questions on Channels Television during a panel session discussing the impact of current government policies.
Olawande highlighted that many young people are drawn to trends without fully understanding the long-term effects of their choices. He noted that foreign tuition fees are generally higher than those in Nigeria and stressed the need for informed decision-making.
The minister pointed to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as a step towards supporting students who may be struggling financially. According to him, this is the first time a Nigerian president has taken clear action to prevent students from dropping out due to lack of funds. He described this initiative as a major breakthrough for education in the country.
He also explained that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is not only focusing on tuition assistance but also working on plans to help graduates secure employment. He believes this approach shows a clear commitment to the long-term development of the youth.
Olawande mentioned that many countries popular among those seeking to japa (relocate abroad) also operate loan-based education systems, but with even steeper tuition rates. He urged young Nigerians to weigh their options carefully and not assume studying abroad is always the better path.
The minister’s comments come amid rising concerns over brain drain and the growing number of Nigerians seeking opportunities overseas.
