Zelensky Calls for Three-Way Summit with Trump and Putin to End War

Zelensky urges a summit with Trump and Putin to end the war, calls for stronger US sanctions as fighting intensifies along Ukraine’s frontlines.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed a summit involving himself, former U.S. President Donald Trump, and Russian President Vladimir Putin to push for an end to Russia’s three-year invasion of Ukraine. Zelensky said he is open to any meeting format, including a three-way discussion, after Putin declined a recent invitation to meet in Turkey. The Kremlin insists talks with Zelensky can only happen after reaching some form of agreement.

The United States has expressed frustration with both leaders for not yet finding a peace deal. Recent weeks saw intense fighting, including nearly 300 drones launched by Ukraine against Russian targets. Moscow reported limited damage but suspended flights at major airports during these attacks.

Zelensky also urged Washington to impose stronger sanctions on Russia’s banking and energy sectors, following Trump’s confirmation that tougher sanctions are likely if Russia continues its aggression. Trump recently called Putin “crazy” and warned that Russia is “playing with fire,” claiming his own influence has prevented worse outcomes for Russia.

Despite ongoing diplomacy, no breakthrough appears near. Russia holds around 20% of Ukrainian land, including Crimea, annexed in 2014. Zelensky highlighted that Russia is building up over 50,000 troops near the northeastern Sumy region, aiming to create a buffer zone inside Ukraine. Ukraine has yet to receive a clear peace proposal from Russia after initial talks in Istanbul.

Zelensky plans to meet German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who supports Ukraine strongly. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that details about a second negotiation round will be shared soon. The conflict continues to inflict heavy civilian casualties and destruction across Ukraine.
