The Nigeria Police Force has launched a nationwide digital system for issuing tinted glass permits, following orders from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. This move comes after growing public complaints about harassment by officers over tinted vehicle windows. The new system is designed to make the process simple, transparent, and secure.
Modern cars often come with factory-fitted tinted windows, which has made the need for a regulated system more urgent. According to the police, criminals have used tinted vehicles to commit crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and “one-chance” scams. These vehicles reduce police visibility and make it harder to track suspects, posing serious threats to public safety.
To address this, the police will now identify legitimate users, such as those with medical needs or individuals in security services, through a streamlined application process. Applicants must provide their National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), complete biometric capture, and undergo a background check.
The new system generates a QR-coded permit and promises processing within 72 hours. A 30-day grace period, starting May 1st, 2025, has been approved to allow motorists time to register. After this window, enforcement begins.
The Police warned that any officer caught harassing or extorting motorists during this exercise will face strict disciplinary actions. The Inspector-General emphasized the Force’s focus on technology-driven policing that serves the public, urging citizens to support the initiative for safer roads and improved security nationwide.
