7-Year-Old Kaduna Boy Loses Legs After Brutal Punishment Over Biscuit Theft

A 7-year-old boy in Kaduna had both legs amputated after his father poured hot water on him for stealing biscuits. Authorities promise justice in this heartbreaking case.

A disturbing case of child abuse has emerged in Kaduna State, where a 7-year-old boy named Abubakar Sani lost both legs after suffering severe burns allegedly inflicted by his father. The incident occurred in the Lere Local Government Area and has sparked outrage across the state.

According to reports confirmed by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Development, the boy’s father, Sani Tanimi Maishago, tied Abubakar’s legs and poured hot water on them as punishment for allegedly stealing biscuits. It was further alleged that Maishago, together with the boy’s stepmother, locked Abubakar in a room for more than 20 days without giving him proper food or medical attention.

By the time the case reached the Ministry, the boy’s condition had deteriorated badly. Hajiya Rabi Salisu, the Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, visited Abubakar at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, where doctors had no choice but to amputate both legs below the knees. According to her, the report was received nine days earlier, and by then, the injuries had become infected, and maggots were already present.

Salisu emphasized the government’s strong stance against child abuse and confirmed that both Maishago and the stepmother had been arrested. She assured the public that the suspects would be prosecuted once investigations are complete, stressing the importance of justice in setting a strong example. She reaffirmed that Kaduna State maintains a zero-tolerance policy on violence against children.

Dr Abdulkadir Musa, Chief Medical Director of Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, described Abubakar’s condition as irreversible. He explained that the extent of the burns made it impossible to save the child’s legs. He added that the hospital is now focused on preparing Abubakar for a life with prosthetics, saying that the use of artificial limbs may help him regain some independence. The doctor also called on parents to reject harmful punishments and find healthier ways to discipline their children.

The shocking nature of the case has drawn public attention, with many calling for swift justice and stronger protective measures for vulnerable children across the country.
