Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu is officially reopening today after undergoing essential repairs to its runway. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had announced on April 18th that the runway would be closed for emergency maintenance due to a significant crack in a crucial section of the surface. The closure, which began on April 22nd, initially scheduled to last until May 6th, 2025, diverted all flights to alternative airports.
However, the FAAN confirmed yesterday that the repairs were completed ahead of schedule. The runway has been cleared for both landings and takeoffs, ensuring the resumption of flight operations. The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, expressed gratitude to passengers and stakeholders for their patience and understanding during the closure. FAAN also offered apologies for the inconvenience caused and reassured the public that the actions were taken with safety as the top priority.
