A fresh oil spill has struck the Ogboinbiri community in Bayelsa State, located in the Apoi clan of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area. The incident occurred on Saturday near Oando’s Ogboinbiri Flow Station in a remote swampy region. Sources revealed that the spill was caused by equipment failure, with a rupture occurring at the 6 o’clock position beneath the pipeline.
Although the company operating the facility has not yet provided a response, concerns have been raised about the frequent oil spills in the area. The Environmental Defenders Network (EDEN) expressed worry, noting that this spill marks the fourth such incident in the region since September 2024.
Comrade Alagoa Morris, Deputy Director of EDEN and the Technical Assistant to the Bayelsa State Governor on Environment, criticized the recurring spills. He emphasized the need for consistent equipment checks, the replacement of old pipelines, and prompt actions to address these spills. Morris also pointed out the urgency of cleaning up the crude oil and properly remediating the affected environment, especially as the rainy season approaches.
