Barry Diller, the renowned media mogul and chairman of IAC, has publicly shared that he is gay. In a heartfelt essay titled The Truth About Us, After All These Years, published in New York Magazine, Diller opened up about his personal journey and his love for his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg. Reflecting on his life, he revealed that while he had romantic relationships with men, von Furstenberg was the one woman who had always been a part of his heart. He met her in 1974 when he was 33, and their relationship, which was at times on-again, off-again, blossomed into a deep love by the time they married in 2001.
Diller admitted that he never questioned his love for von Furstenberg but struggled with how others might view his sexuality. Their relationship, which surprised both of them and those around them, is something Diller calls the miracle of his life. While the couple never had children together, von Furstenberg has two adult children from her previous marriage. Diller has never been married to anyone else.
In his essay, Diller acknowledged his attraction to men, clarifying that it didn’t conflict with his love for von Furstenberg. He expressed that it was difficult to explain to himself or to the world, but he now finds comfort in the modern, fluid understanding of sexuality. Von Furstenberg responded to Diller’s revelation through her representative, emphasizing the importance of honesty in love and life, quoting Diane Chamberlain. Although their current relationship status remains private, neither Diller nor von Furstenberg has filed for divorce.
