A former Permanent Secretary in Ebonyi State, Chief Boniface Mgebu, was attacked by suspected hoodlums while traveling from Abakaliki to his village in Noyo Alike, Ikwo LGA. The incident occurred around 7 pm on the Obubura-Enyida road in Abakaliki LGA. During the attack, Mgebu’s Hilux Jeep, along with his cash, phones, and other valuables, was set on fire.
Speaking from his hospital bed at the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, Mgebu recounted that two armed assailants attempted to either steal his vehicle or kidnap him. He described how one assailant forcefully entered his driver’s side and struggled with him over the steering wheel, while the second assailant entered the passenger side with a gun. The attackers attempted to drive him to an unknown location, but Mgebu managed to fight back, causing the vehicle to crash into a ditch. Soon after, the vehicle exploded in flames.
Mgebu expressed disbelief at his survival, calling the experience a miracle. He has reported the attack to the police in Abakaliki. He has appealed to the State Governor for assistance with his medical bills and to help replace the car that was completely destroyed, along with the valuables lost in the fire.
