The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has launched an investigation into a tragic accident that occurred on Friday night in Abuja, which led to the death of three people. The incident, involving one of its firefighting trucks and a Toyota Camry, occurred around 11 PM at the ECOWAS Junction in Wuse 2, during a rescue operation. The collision, which also left one individual critically injured, occurred while the fire truck was returning to refill its water supply after exhausting its resources at the scene of a fire at Avenue Plaza, Banex.
The truck, operating at high speed with its sirens blaring, collided with the Toyota Camry coming out of a connecting street. In response to the heartbreaking loss of life, the Federal Fire Service expressed deep sorrow and condolences to the families of the deceased, who were young victims with bright futures ahead of them. The Service also extended prayers for the swift recovery of the survivor, who is currently receiving medical care in an undisclosed hospital.
In a statement issued by Ganiyu Momodu, the Controller of the Federal Capital Territory Metropolitan Fire Command, the Fire Service acknowledged the immense grief the families are enduring. They recognized that the loss of children is a traumatic event that alters the course of a family’s life—the Controller General of Fire, Engr. Abdulganiyu O. Jaji was out of town at the time of the incident but quickly returned to Abuja upon hearing the news. He met with the affected families and ordered a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.
The police have detained the driver of the rescue truck, and personnel at the FCT rescue center have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. The Federal Fire Service emphasized its dedication to protecting lives and property while expressing its deepest sympathies to all affected by this tragic event.
