In a recent court session, a Federal Government witness, known as BBB, submitted a certified copy of the death certificate of Ahmed Gulak, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan. The document was presented as part of the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The death of Gulak was allegedly caused by members of IPOB in 2021, reportedly due to his defiance of a sit-at-home order issued by the group.
BBB, the second prosecution witness in the case, provided the document in the Federal High Court in Abuja during a session led by the government’s lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN. Although the session was initially scheduled for cross-examination, Awomolo sought permission from the court to ask the witness a question. This was granted by the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho.
The lawyer inquired about the previous testimony, where the witness confirmed that a radio broadcast by Kanu had incited the sit-at-home, which led to Gulak’s death. BBB confirmed his involvement in the investigation into Gulak’s killing. He also presented the death certificate, which was issued by the police on July 18, 2021, stating that Gulak was shot dead by suspected IPOB members in Imo State.
Upon reviewing the document, Kanu’s lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, raised no objections, and the court accepted the certificate into evidence, marking it as Exhibit PWJ. BBB then read aloud the contents of the certificate, confirming the circumstances of Gulak’s death. The session proceeded with cross-examination by Agabi, as the trial continues.
