On the evening of May 15, members of the Anambra Joint Security Team successfully repelled an armed attack at a security checkpoint in Isuofia. The assailants, who initially ambushed the officers with gunfire, met heavy resistance during the ensuing confrontation. Two of the attackers were killed, but tragically, one security officer lost his life, and one of the team’s vehicles was set on fire by the criminals.
In a statement to the press, the spokesperson for the security command, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed that despite the intense firefight, the superior firepower of the security team forced the assailants to abandon one of their vehicles, a Toyota Sienna, before fleeing the scene. The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the attack, describing it as a challenge to the collective resolve of the people of Anambra to collaborate with security forces in eliminating criminal elements. He also reassured the public that the authorities are determined to apprehend those responsible for the attack. Meanwhile, additional security operatives are actively combing the surrounding areas in search of the fleeing suspects.
