Moves to impeach Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, appear unlikely to succeed anytime soon. Though some lawmakers and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have pushed for his removal following his defection to the party, strong support from Governor Monday Okpebholo seems to be holding off any major change.
Insiders revealed that despite past political differences between the governor and the speaker, Okpebholo has repeatedly backed Agbebaku, urging lawmakers on at least two occasions to allow him to remain in office. The governor reportedly values Agbebaku’s loyalty and consistent support, which included the smooth passage of bills and approvals even when the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held the majority.
A source close to the government noted that removing the speaker might create more problems than it solves. If Agbebaku is removed, his replacement would most likely come from Edo North—a region already packed with influential figures in the APC. This includes Senator Adams Oshiomhole, APC State Chairman Jarrett Tenebe, Minister of Regional Development Abubakar Momoh, former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, and Majority Leader of the House of Representatives Julius Ihonvbere.
These powerful stakeholders could clash over who becomes the next speaker, potentially sparking internal party rivalry. The governor may prefer to avoid such tension, especially if the next speaker ends up being more loyal to these party heavyweights than to him.
Agbebaku’s continued stay seems less about party loyalty and more about political strategy. For now, the balance of power, loyalty, and potential conflict keeps the Speaker firmly in place.
