FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has promised that residents of Guzape and Kpaduma, whose homes fall within the area marked for a new road construction, will receive full and fair compensation. This assurance came during a meeting with traditional leaders and representatives of the two communities in Abuja on Monday.
Wike stated that the Federal Capital Territory Administration will not delay payments and will also provide a Right of Occupancy for the new resettlement areas. He stressed that the ongoing road project is essential for improving traffic flow and connectivity in the city.
During the meeting, the minister ordered the Director of Resettlement to review the compensation figures and double the current rates. Using a simple example, he said, “If someone is supposed to get ₦50, give them ₦100.” He made it clear that the government’s aim is not to displace anyone unfairly, but to build a better Abuja for everyone.
While compensation will only cover structures directly on the road corridor—not the entire community—Wike reassured leaders that residents would receive legal documents for their new homes. He acknowledged the strong emotional ties people have to their land but asked for understanding, explaining that development sometimes requires tough choices.
In response, the traditional rulers, led by the Sa’peyi of Garki, Alhaji Usman Nga-Kupi, thanked Wike for his openness and for involving them in the discussion. Nga-Kupi expressed support for the project and pledged that the communities would cooperate with the resettlement process to ensure peace and progress.
Wike ended the meeting with a strong statement: “I don’t run from fights,” emphasising his commitment to stay in the PDP and continue his role in improving the capital city.
