Five women lost their lives to domestic violence in 2024, according to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA). The agency’s Executive Secretary, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, shared the information during a community town hall meeting held at the Kosofe Local Government office.
Vivour-Adeniyi said four of the women’s spouses or partners had been arrested, while the fifth suspect is still on the run. All cases have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti. She confirmed that autopsies were conducted to determine the causes of death, and some of the cases are already in court under the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
She emphasized the importance of early reporting, warning that domestic violence can quickly escalate to life-threatening situations. Vivour-Adeniyi urged victims or witnesses to call 08000333333 for immediate help and access to state-supported services.
According to her, each incident of abuse could be one step away from becoming fatal. She called on survivors to speak up and access available support, including medical care, legal assistance, counseling, shelter, and empowerment programs. She also noted that community leaders play a vital role in ensuring that reports of domestic violence are treated with urgency and seriousness.
Vivour-Adeniyi concluded by stressing the need to end silence around domestic violence and ensure that every report is followed by swift and effective action.
