Isaac Fayose has claimed that freedom of speech does not truly exist in Africa. He made this statement while commenting on the public clash between former U.S. President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk. On Thursday, June 5, Musk openly criticized Trump, claiming the ex-president wouldn’t have won office without his help. Musk also accused Trump of being ungrateful.
In response, Fayose pointed out that such a public exchange would be unthinkable in Nigeria. He urged people to consider the backlash if Aliko Dangote—Africa’s richest man—ever claimed to have helped President Tinubu win power. According to Fayose, the result would be severe, suggesting Dangote’s businesses could be shut down for making such a statement.
Fayose further explained that even he has faced warnings against speaking out about political figures like Nyesom Wike. People have advised him to stop criticizing powerful politicians or face consequences. He questioned when African societies would allow citizens to voice their opinions about leaders without fear or punishment.
