The Federal Government has announced Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday in honor of Nigeria’s Democracy Day. The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement through a statement issued in Abuja by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians as the country marks 26 years of uninterrupted civilian rule. He described June 12 as a day that reflects Nigeria’s continued commitment to justice, peace, and national unity. According to the minister, the progress made over the past two and a half decades demonstrates the resilience and determination of the Nigerian people.
He also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s dedication to democratic values, stating that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains focused on protecting the rights of citizens and strengthening democratic institutions. The minister emphasized that democracy thrives when citizens can choose their leaders and shape the nation’s political, social, and economic direction.
