The statement, signed by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, highlighted Justice Uwais’ dedication to honor and integrity throughout his career. Serving as Chief Justice from 1995 to 2006, he helped stabilize the judiciary during a challenging time, laying the foundation for Nigeria’s current democracy. He notably administered the oath of office to President Olusegun Obasanjo on May 29, 1999, marking a historic step in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Senior Advocate Tayo Oyetibo also paid tribute, calling Justice Uwais a “gentleman par excellence” whose time on the Supreme Court shaped consistent judicial rulings. Senator Nenadi Usman, National Chairman of the Labour Party, urged the government to honor Justice Uwais by implementing his championed electoral reforms. She described his leadership as principled and visionary, setting a high standard for future legal professionals.
