Gowon Reflects on Biafra War, Urges Nigerians to Choose Unity Over Division

General Gowon calls the Biafra war a “difficult necessity” and urges Nigerians to embrace peace, forgiveness, and unity across all boundaries.

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, described the Nigerian Civil War as a “difficult necessity” meant to preserve the country’s unity. At the Annual Conference of the Anglican Men’s Christian Fellowship in Abuja, Gowon shared personal reflections and urged citizens to pursue peace, forgiveness, and mutual respect.

The event took place at Saint Matthew’s Anglican Church, Maitama. It brought together religious and political leaders, including the Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba.

Now 91 years old, Gowon led Nigeria during the 1967–1970 civil war and said the decision to fight was not driven by hatred but by a deep commitment to national unity. He recalled that period as the most challenging of his life and spoke about the pain of losing close friends, including Major Arthur Unegbe. He emphasized that his leadership decisions were rooted in prayer and guided by integrity and compassion.

Gowon encouraged Nigerians to stand by efforts promoting national cohesion and peaceful coexistence, regardless of religion or ethnicity. He urged prayers for a more united country, one where Christians, Muslims, and even non-believers can live peacefully together.

During his address, Primate Ndukuba appealed to leaders to govern honestly and compassion. He blamed corruption, nepotism, and greed for the country’s difficulties and advised President Bola Tinubu to hold his appointees accountable.

The President of the Abuja Diocesan Christian Men’s Fellowship, Isaac Chukwudi, acknowledged the country’s economic struggles and encouraged men to lead responsibly at home and in society.

Also present was a representative of former President Goodluck Jonathan, John-Kennedy Opara, who praised the awardees for their impact and moral strength.

The event concluded with Lifetime Integrity and Achievement Awards presented to General Yakubu Gowon, Dr. Christopher Kolade, and Owelle Gilbert Chikellu in recognition of their service to the Church, nation, and humanity.
