Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, running for the Anambra South senatorial seat under APGA, has awarded Immigration Officer Prince Ugochukwu Orji ₦5 million. The reward came after Orji arrested a suspected ritualist fleeing from Enugu State. The presentation took place at Onunkwo’s home in Ihembosi, Anambra State.
Onunkwo, who also leads Seahorse Lubricant Industries Ltd, praised Orji’s commitment to justice and integrity. He said the gift was part of his company’s social responsibility and an effort to encourage honesty in Nigerian society. The suspect had tried multiple times to bribe Orji with up to ₦15 million to avoid arrest. Orji refused and used careful tactics to confirm the suspect’s identity before detaining him.
Onunkwo called on the Nigerian government and the Immigration Service to recognize and promote Orji’s courage. He emphasized that rewarding such honesty would inspire others and strengthen accountability. He also urged civil society to highlight Orji’s example to promote ethical leadership nationwide.
Orji recounted the arrest, explaining how he noticed the suspect, Mr. Levi Obieze, at the Nigeria-Benin border. Despite the suspect’s denials and repeated bribe offers, Orji remained firm. He eventually confirmed the suspect’s identity and found evidence linking him to criminal activity. This act has won praise as a rare example of integrity in public service.
