The Nigerian Army has taken significant steps to improve security in the North Central region. Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff, recently provided essential combat equipment and sent an additional 300 soldiers to support Operation Whirl Stroke.
A reliable source, who chose to remain unnamed, shared with the News Agency of Nigeria that this move aims to strengthen security efforts in the area. The new resources include over 100 motorcycles, troop-carrying vehicles, and protective gear, designed to improve soldiers’ mobility, response time, and safety in challenging terrains where threats are common.
During a visit to Benue, the Army Chief delivered these items at the Joint Task Force headquarters in Makurdi. He also met with the state government, offering condolences for recent violent attacks that caused loss of lives and property damage. Oluyede promised to intensify efforts to protect residents and ordered a review of current strategies to reinforce troop presence in high-risk areas. Major General Moses Gara, Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, thanked the Army Chief for the timely support, stating that the new equipment would enhance operations, boost soldier morale, and improve awareness of local conditions.
The source noted that under Oluyede’s leadership, the army has made notable progress in preparing for internal security tasks. Operation Whirl Stroke, started on May 18, 2018, targets armed herdsmen and militia groups in Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, and Zamfara. This latest effort highlights the Nigerian Army’s dedication to ensuring national safety, promoting peace, and supporting regional development.
