On June 21, 2025, a lightning strike killed 32 cows during heavy rainfall in Osara, a village in the Obantoko area of Abeokuta, Odeda Local Government Area, Ogun State. The incident happened around 2:00 pm, alarming Fulani herders who reported it to the village leader, Baale Wasiu Afolabi. On Sunday, Afolabi told journalists he visited the herders’ grazing station and saw the dead cows. He reported the event to the Aregbe Police Division and Dr. Afolashade Adeyemo, the Chairman of Odeda Local Government. Afolabi said a meeting with the herders is planned to discuss the incident and maintain peace in the community. Commissioner of Police Lanre Ogunlowo confirmed the report was received at 1:30 pm on June 21, and officers were sent to the scene. He noted the cows died during a thunderstorm with heavy rain. The unusual event has surprised residents and raised concerns about the safety of livestock during severe weather. Authorities are overseeing the situation and encouraging calm as they work to address the incident’s impact.
