A newly built Smart School in Lafia, Nasarawa State, collapsed just days after its construction contract was canceled due to substandard work. The incident followed heavy rainfall in the area. The contract for the school quarters was originally awarded by the previous leadership of the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board, led by Mr. Dan’Azimi. The current board chairman, Mohammed Kassim, conducted an inspection tour of ongoing projects and found the building’s construction quality lacking. Dissatisfied, Kassim ordered an immediate halt to the work and summoned the contractor to the site for a meeting. The contractor failed to show up, and shortly afterward, the structure collapsed. Kassim has issued a stern warning to all contractors to adhere to high standards, emphasizing that no payment will be made for poor-quality work. The contractor responsible for the collapsed school has been called to appear before the board to explain the incident. Authorities are now investigating the sudden collapse to ensure accountability and prevent future failures.
