Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has pledged to reduce maternal and child mortality by improving access to quality healthcare. He made this commitment during the commissioning of a new 100-bed hospital in Awo-Omamma, a facility built and equipped by the federal government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Sustainable Development Goals initiative.
The centre, named after Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is designed to cater specifically to women and children in the state. Governor Uzodimma thanked the Presidency for the project, describing it as a major step in expanding healthcare outreach in Imo. He highlighted ongoing initiatives by his administration, including the introduction of mobile rural clinics, the construction of three new general hospitals, a specialist hospital in Umuguma, and the revival of the Imo State University Teaching Hospital in Orlu, which has regained full accreditation.
He promised that the new hospital would be well-staffed, maintained, and used strictly for its intended purpose.
Representing the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima, called on the local community to take full ownership of the facility. She described maternal and child health as vital to national development and pledged continued support from the Office of the First Lady to improve healthcare nationwide.
Barrister Chioma Uzodimma, wife of the Imo State Governor, praised Senator Tinubu’s dedication to women’s health through the Renewed Hope Initiative. She said the new centre would help ensure safer births and healthier children. She also thanked President Tinubu for enabling projects that directly impact citizens.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulere, acknowledged the support of the Imo State government in realizing the project. She urged residents to protect and use the facility to its fullest potential.
Dr. Vivian Chioma Egu, Imo’s Commissioner for Primary Health, described the hospital’s opening as historic and a fulfillment of a promise. She expressed gratitude to the state and federal governments for their collaboration.
The ceremony ended with the official commissioning of the hospital by the Vice President’s wife, marking a new chapter in Imo’s healthcare journey.
