Three Masqueraders Arrested in Enugu for Allegedly Attacking Residents

Police arrest three masqueraders in Enugu for allegedly assaulting residents during the Oriokpa festival, with more suspects still on the run.

The police have arrested three masqueraders from the Nsukka area of Enugu State for allegedly attacking residents during the Oriokpa masquerade celebration. According to police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe, the arrests were made on June 23 at about 3:30 p.m. with help from community members.

The suspects were reportedly part of a group that assaulted several individuals during the cultural event held on June 22. A viral video of the incident showed members of the Oriokpa masquerade group physically attacking innocent citizens, leading to multiple injuries. One victim is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

Although the suspects initially resisted arrest and fled the scene, police later tracked them down with assistance from local residents. Other suspects involved in the attack are still at large.

Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa has ordered a detailed investigation to ensure justice is served. He stressed that while masquerade celebrations are an important part of the country’s cultural identity, they should not be used as an excuse to harm others. Giwa condemned those who hid under cultural festivities to commit crimes and warned that anyone found guilty would be held accountable.

The police have assured the public that all individuals involved in the assault will face legal consequences.
