Madonna Alumni President Urges Students to Build Skills Beyond Degrees

Madonna University alumni president advises students to gain real-world skills, as certificates alone no longer guarantee success in today’s competitive job market.

Chuka Nwachukwu, President of the Madonna University Alumni Association, has called on students to build practical skills that complement their academic achievements. At the university’s 2025 Career Day held at the Elele campus, he emphasized that employers are now more interested in adaptability, digital skills, and emotional intelligence than paper qualifications.

Nwachukwu shared insights from his experience after graduation, encouraging students to take charge of their career paths by actively learning beyond the classroom. He advised them to explore internships, complete online certifications, grow their professional network on platforms like LinkedIn, and treat themselves as brands with value to offer.

He pointed out that many talented individuals in Nigeria miss out on opportunities due to a poor attitude, not a lack of knowledge. “Your certificate might get you through the door,” he said, “but it’s your skills and mindset that will keep you in the room.”

The event also featured a speech from Chima Achu, former national alumni president, who urged students to embrace integrity, pursue excellence, and continue learning throughout their lives. Both speakers encouraged a mindset shift from just chasing jobs to preparing for long-term personal and professional growth.

The Alumni Association, under Nwachukwu’s leadership, announced a major donation to support the construction of a modern ICT centre on campus. Plans were also revealed to create an Alumni Endowment Fund to support future development projects.

Responding to these initiatives, Vice Chancellor Professor Casmir Anyanwu praised the association’s support and said the university remains committed to producing graduates who are knowledgeable and prepared to face global challenges with the right skills and mindset.

Nwachukwu closed by reaffirming his goal of building a strong, supportive alumni network that empowers current students, uplifts fellow graduates, and contributes meaningfully to the university’s future.

The 2025 Career Day ended with networking sessions and renewed connections between students and alumni.
