Gunmen Kill Police Inspector in Plateau During Ambush

A police inspector has been killed in Plateau during an ambush by armed men. His rifle was stolen and the area remains under serious threat.

Gunmen have killed Inspector Yakubu Dauda, a police officer serving in Chwelnyap Rim community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. The attackers also took away his rifle. The incident happened on Monday, June 23, 2025, during a police operation following reports of rising insecurity in the area.

David Tsado, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Riyom, confirmed the incident to journalists during a visit by a fact-finding team set up by Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang. Tsado said the officers were responding to a security threat when the gunmen, who were large in number and heavily armed, ambushed them.

According to the DPO, the team was tracing the location of the threat when the gunmen opened fire. Inspector Dauda was killed during the attack. His body has been deposited at the hospital morgue. On Tuesday, more officers were deployed by the Commissioner of Police for a follow-up operation, but they were forced to retreat after another intense confrontation.

Major General Nicholas Rogers, who leads the governor’s investigative committee, said the team visited to understand the cause of ongoing violence and collect ideas from locals on how to stop the attacks. Youth and community leaders told the team that at least nine people had been killed and 33 houses destroyed in the past month alone. They expressed hope that the committee’s findings would help restore peace to the region.
