Lagos Woman Accuses Police of Siding with Influential Man in Car Ownership Dispute

A Lagos mother says a man is trying to seize her car without proof, alleging police bias despite her valid documents and confirmed ownership history.

A 47-year-old single mother, Mrs. Grace Osika, has accused the police of trying to help a powerful man take her vehicle despite her holding full proof of ownership. She said she legally bought the Nigerian-used Toyota RAV-4 in 2023 from a seller named Sammy and verified all necessary documents, including customs papers and ownership records, before purchasing.

Trouble started in April 2025 when she sold the car to another man identified as Alhaji. A week later, he contacted her, saying a man named Chinedu Ejiofor showed up claiming his vehicle was stolen. The matter was first reported at the Ikotun Police Station in Lagos.

According to Osika, the man had no documents, police report, affidavit, or even a photo of the car. His only claim was that he recognised a stain in the car’s boot. Feeling the process wasn’t fair, Osika petitioned for the case to be moved to the Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan, Lagos.

At Zone 2, she provided all documents showing the vehicle’s history from 2015. She also contacted previous owners by phone, who confirmed their timelines. She added that the vehicle identification number (VIN) matched the documents, and the vehicle had fabric seats.

However, she said the accuser claimed he imported the car in 2023, said it had leather seats, and gave a completely different VIN. Despite the inconsistencies, Osika said the man bragged about his connections with officers in the Anambra State Police Command and allegedly threatened to move the case there.

She now fears the case is being transferred to Anambra State and believes it’s an attempt to take her property using intimidation and influence. According to her, the man boasted during a meeting at Zone 2 that he could bend the law because he “feeds the police in Anambra.”

Distressed by the ongoing pressure, Osika said the case is no longer just about the car but about how those with power can twist the system to their advantage, leaving ordinary citizens like her vulnerable.
