Senator Ndume Mulls Leaving APC, Attends Opposition Talks Over Tinubu’s Leadership

Senator Ali Ndume hints at quitting APC, says he's joined opposition meetings and may exit if Tinubu fails to fix the country before 2027.

Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South, has revealed he may leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) if President Bola Tinubu’s administration does not improve the country’s situation. He confirmed attending several meetings held by a coalition of opposition parties aiming to unseat the president in the next general election.

Speaking on Arise TV on Tuesday, Ndume expressed growing concern about the direction of the ruling party and warned that it may collapse under its own weight if things don’t change. He said he still hopes President Tinubu can deliver good leadership, but will not hesitate to reconsider his political future if things worsen.

According to him, many politicians joining the APC are not doing so out of principle, but because of what he described as an “indirect stick-and-carrot” strategy. He criticised the wave of defections, arguing they lack sincerity and weaken the political process.

Ndume explained his caution, saying he does not want to switch parties blindly, comparing it to jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Still, he noted that he’s keeping his options open. He stressed the importance of fixing the system from within rather than abandoning it, using the metaphor of repairing a leaking house rather than running from it.

He added that overloading the political “ship” with opportunistic members could lead to disaster for the APC, despite the president’s earlier remarks about a vacancy being available on board.
