Lagos Government Distances Itself from Demolition of Peter Obi’s Brother’s Property

Lagos State denies role in demolition linked to Peter Obi’s brother, calls claims misleading, and orders full investigation into the incident.

The Lagos State Government has denied having any role in the recent demolition of a building said to belong to the brother of Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, the government described Mr. Obi’s remarks as false and politically driven. According to him, no agency under the Lagos State Government, including the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), carried out the demolition.

The Commissioner quoted Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, Special Adviser on eGIS and Urban Development, who oversees LASBCA, as saying the agency had no link to the incident.

Omotoso expressed concern that such a serious allegation was made without verifying the facts. He suggested that the timing, close to the upcoming local elections, made the claim appear politically motivated.

He also emphasized that the government remains committed to justice and the rule of law, warning that anyone found responsible for any unlawful demolition would be held accountable.

To get the full picture of what happened, the state government has ordered a full investigation. The Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, Architect Gbolahun Owodunni Oki, has been directed to lead the probe through LASBCA.

The state assured all residents that their rights and safety are a top priority, regardless of their political background.
