Queen Mary of Denmark visits APM Terminals Apapa, Lagos

Queen Mary of Denmark visits APM Terminals Apapa, Lagos, spotlighting women in logistics and green innovation during her official tour of Nigeria.

Queen Mary of Denmark paid a visit to APM Terminals in Apapa, Lagos, on Wednesday as part of her official trip to Nigeria. She was welcomed by APM Terminals Nigeria CEO, Frederik Klinke, and Terminal Manager, Steen Knudsen, along with the Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, Jens Ole Bach Hansen, and Denmark’s Minister for Education and Science, Christina Egelund.

Known for championing women’s rights and environmental sustainability, Queen Mary began her tour by meeting with female equipment operators at the terminal. The visit focused on how APM Terminals is actively creating more opportunities for women in roles typically dominated by men, including truck driving and mechanics.

She also visited the terminal’s Equipment Simulation Room, where staff are trained using advanced simulators. This stop highlighted APM’s commitment to workforce development through education and skills training.

The Queen later met with local sustainability partners GIVO Africa and Freee Recycle Limited, observing how the terminal manages rubber and plastic waste by converting it into reusable products. This effort, she noted, is a strong example of how industrial operations can support environmental goals.

Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen expressed pride in hosting the Queen, noting that gender diversity and education are core values at both their Apapa and Onne facilities. He explained that the company’s programs aim to prepare women for leadership and technical roles, while also investing in local infrastructure that connects Nigeria more strongly to global trade.

Knudsen emphasized that Nigeria remains a key market for APM Terminals, with ongoing plans to support job creation, sustainable growth, and improved logistics across the country.
