Professor Lateef Oladimeji Sanni, President of the Anglophone West Africa Association of Food Science and Technology, has warned Ibadan residents not to sell key parts of the city to foreigners. He said such actions could harm the city’s future. He gave the warning while speaking at the first Chief Kola Daisi Annual Lecture held at the Ibadan Civic Centre, Idi-Ape.
Professor Sanni explained that some individuals now encroach on family-owned land, sell it without full consent, or hand over important documents to outsiders. He praised the state government’s decision to criminalize these practices but stressed that the people must take the lead in protecting Ibadan’s core assets.
According to him, Ibadan can only develop if it embraces better urban planning, improved infrastructure, and strong community involvement. He also mentioned the need to tackle challenges like flooding and environmental damage.
Calling on the youth, Professor Sanni encouraged them to build on the efforts of past generations and take responsibility for the city’s growth. He highlighted the importance of the circular road project, designed to cover 110 kilometres around the city, as a way to connect all major areas and improve access.
He urged all Ibadan indigenes to support development projects that will improve the city’s image and future.
Earlier at the event, Alhaji Tunji Afunlehin, President of the Ibadan Foundation, shared the group’s efforts in awarding scholarships and bursaries to underprivileged students. This was backed by the chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Ayoku Liadi, who confirmed that many students in universities, polytechnics, and other institutions have benefited from the program.
