The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has once again called for the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has now spent four years in custody.
In a statement issued on Friday in Enugu, the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, appealed to President Bola Tinubu to act decisively by using constitutional powers and diplomatic means to secure Kanu’s freedom.
Dr Chukwu described Kanu’s arrest and subsequent extradition from Kenya as unlawful and said the detention raises serious concerns about the integrity of Nigeria’s justice system. He questioned the legitimacy of holding Kanu for four years without concluding legal proceedings, pointing out that justice delayed is justice denied.
He stressed that the matter has moved beyond legality into a moral and political issue, urging the federal government to consider equity, fairness, and inclusive justice in resolving the case.
