A leadership dispute has sparked serious unrest in the Tuomo community, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, splitting the town into two opposing camps and prompting protests at the community waterfront. Women and youths gathered with placards, pleading with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to step in and resolve the ongoing crisis, which centres around who should occupy the traditional stool of Amanana-owei.
According to Chief Akperi Akpola, Chief Ebikapaye Agidee was elected by residents of Akerebunou Quarters under a zoning agreement and was sworn in by the town’s oldest man, Pa Stephen Kuro-akigha Waide. However, Burutu Council Chairman, Chief Julius Takeme, dismissed the process, claiming it was unconstitutional and insisted the stool remained vacant.
The situation worsened after reports emerged that some community leaders met in Warri and named Arebebe Ebiemi as Amanana-owei. Protesters condemned this move, saying it violated their constitution. Chief Akpola insisted the swearing-in must take place within Tuomo and described the Warri selection as illegal.
Community members, including Mrs. Wele Ongulu, said the unrest had created fear and sleepless nights. She insisted the community had made its choice and rejected external influence. Youth spokesperson Comrade Jeff Akassa Ombe accused politicians of using security agents to harass residents and force unpopular candidates on them. He referenced a previous attempt to impose Mr. Warebi Edonyabo as chairman, which ended in his removal for misconduct.
Elder Pa Waide urged for peace, saying although the community had carried out the swearing-in, unity remained essential. Meanwhile, Chief Takeme stood by his claim that no valid election took place and said Agidee had ignored multiple invitations from security operatives. He confirmed Arebebe Ebiemi’s appointment was the outcome of a recent meeting in Warri.
Shortly after the protest, armed security officers reportedly entered the community and fired tear gas, causing panic and a stampede. Residents questioned the use of force, noting there was no violence to justify the action.
