Lagos Government Reopens Oko Oba Abattoir After Meeting Hygiene Standards

Oko Oba abattoir resumes operations after Lagos State confirms compliance with sanitation rules following a 10-day closure over environmental violations.

The Lagos State Government has lifted the suspension on the Oko Oba Abattoir in Agege just 10 days after it was shut down for violating environmental safety rules. The facility was originally closed on June 20 after an inspection revealed poor hygiene practices and a disregard for state sanitation laws.

Following improvements and adherence to the recommended hygiene and sanitation measures, authorities have now approved the reopening of the facility. The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed that the abattoir operators have met the basic requirements needed for safe operations.

Wahab emphasized that the government will not tolerate a return to the unsanitary conditions that led to the closure. He warned that officials from the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources will carry out monthly inspections to ensure ongoing compliance.

He also urged all operators to handle animal products properly, manage waste effectively, and maintain a clean environment at all times. A visit to the facility early Saturday showed that both workers and buyers had resumed business as usual, with normal operations already underway.
