Tiwa Savage Shares Candid Truths About Fame, Family, and Finding Herself

Tiwa Savage opens up about motherhood, late career start, mental health, and why fame isn't always what it seems behind the spotlight.

Tiwa Savage has opened up about the personal and professional experiences that have shaped her journey as one of Nigeria’s top music stars. Speaking during a revealing chat with Joey Akan on Afrobeats Intelligence, the singer shared heartfelt insights into motherhood, the struggles behind fame, and how starting her music career later than most turned out to be her biggest advantage.

Reflecting on her rise in the industry, Tiwa said starting her career later in life allowed her to be more deliberate and grounded. At the time, it felt like a disadvantage, but she now sees it as a gift. “I was very intentional about sustaining my career. Me starting at a late age was a blessing. I didn’t think it was though,” she said.

She also spoke about raising her son and the quiet pressure that can come with being the child of a famous musician. Tiwa explained that while she hopes to support her son’s dreams, she doesn’t want him to feel obligated to follow in her footsteps. “Some kids have parents who are great musicians, but they don’t have that natural gift. I don’t want my son to feel pressured because of me,” she added. For Tiwa, her son must find his own voice, especially in an industry as demanding as the music industry.

The singer didn’t shy away from discussing the darker sides of celebrity life either. She shared how artists often struggle with mental health and financial instability, despite the glamorous lifestyle they’re expected to maintain. “You have to appear to have money when a lot of the times you don’t. It’s not consistent,” she revealed.

Tiwa also touched on the pressure of public perception. Artists, she said, must either build thick skin from the start or slowly develop it over time to survive constant scrutiny. Her words painted a clear picture of a world where fame comes with invisible battles, often misunderstood by fans and the public alike.
